The Second China’s SMEs Global Development Forum

I. Background and Objective

After the global financial crisis and the most severe recession since 1930’s, the world economy is still in a vulnerable recovery, with growth and job creation remaining the top priority for all national governments and business. History has proved repeatedly that each major recession was followed by major innovation and changes in technology, thus creating new growth. The world today is also faced with a new historic chance—the third industrial revolution.

The world history has also proved repeatedly that, most of the new technology innovation and changes originated in SMEs. In the United States, for example, over 70% of innovation and invention was created in SMEs since 1980’s. Microsoft, HP, Cisco, Amazon, Yahoo and Alibaba, the world giants today, started with limited capacity. The SMEs account for over 98% of world business entities, over 50% of output and most jobs, and thus are crucial for the future of the world economic resurgence.

The Global leaders would need to secure the SMEs role, unleashing entrepreneurship and contributing to prosperity by redressing the current undersupply of Global Public Goods for economic development; like International Financial Stability, Free and Fair Trade Regimes, Knowledge Dissemination Mechanisms and Environment Protection Frameworks.

Following the First China’s SMEs Development Forum held in the UNIDO Headquarters on June 25, 2012, the Global Alliance of SMEs proposes to hold the Second China’s SMEs Global Development Forum with Ningbo Entrepreneurs Association and Zhejiang SME Association in Ningbo. The forum is aimed at building up a high-end exchange platform for government leaders, senior international organization officials, executives of the SMEs, and academic leaders for timely discussion on the challenges that the SMEs are facing in their growth and development today, and exploration on the possible solutions.
