China-U.S. High-Tech Trade Seminar Held in Shanghai

China-U.S. High-Tech Trade Seminar, co-sponsored by Chinese Ministry of Commerce and the U.S. Commerce Department, was held in Shanghai on May 31-June 1. Vice Minister of Commerce Jiang Yaoping and Daniel O. Hill, Deputy Under Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce, addressed the seminar.

Jiang Yaoping said that the seminar is aimed to implement the consensus reached in the 4th round of China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue and the 22th session of China-U.S. Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade, and to enhance bilateral high-tech trade cooperation. Economic and trade cooperation is a vital base for China-U.S. relations. China’s sustainable and rapid economic development has laid a solid foundation for expanding Sino-U.S. cooperation, and the complementarities in economic and industrial structure of the two countries ensure that bilateral cooperation can achieve long-term mutually beneficial and win-win results.

Jiang Yaoping pointed out that the US decontrol its high-tech export to China, is of great significance to further expanding Sino-U.S. economic and trade cooperation. China and the U.S., through high-level mutual visits and China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue and China-U.S. Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade, have reached much important consensus on expanding bilateral high-tech trade, achieving positive results. However, the U.S. policy of strict control on export to China has made Sino-U.S. high-tech trade cooperation lagged far behind the development of bilateral relations.

Jiang Yaoping expressed that China and the U.S. should seize the opportunity to enhance mutual trust, promote cooperation, and create a sound environment for bilateral economic and trade cooperation, hoping that the U.S. to take pragmatic and effective measures to promote Sino-U.S. trade in high technology, and expand exports of competitive civilian high-tech products to China.

The two parties agreed that the seminar will play a positive role in promoting bilateral high-tech trade cooperation, and maintaining the sound development of Sino-U.S. economic and trade relations. The two parties discussed on such topics as promoting cooperation in such key areas as aviation and semiconductor, and export control policies and procedures of the two countries.
